Kroger Pet Food Recalled for Aflatoxin Poisoning, Health Risks

Kroger announced on Tuesday that it is voluntarily recalling many of its Kroger, Old Yeller and Pet Pride dry dog and cat food varieties because they could contain aflatoxin. Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring chemical by-product that is toxic. Aflatoxin grows from the fungus Aspergillus Flavus found in corn and other crop foods used in pet food production.

Kroger stores are located in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia. Other stores within the Kroger food network that are affected by the pet food recall include: Dillons and Gerbes stores (Kansas and Missouri): Baker's stores (Nebraska); Food 4 Less stores (Nebraska, Illinois and Indiana and the Chicago area); and Jay C, Hilander, Owen's, Pay Less and Scott's stores located in Illinois and Indiana. Kroger affiliate stores not affected by the pet food recall include: Fred Meyer, King Soopers, Fry's, Smith's, QFC, City Market, Foods Co., Ralph's and Food 4 Less stores in California and Nevada.

Pet foods have a sell by date of Oct. 23-24, 2011. Visit the FDA website for specific UPC code details. Pet foods included in the Kroger recall are:

If you have purchased any of the Kroger pet foods included in the recall, or store brand pet food from any of the stores listed, stop feeding it to your pets. Remove and discard uneaten portions. You should contact Kroger immediately, either by phone at (800) 632-6900 or on the Kroger Pet Food recall assistance website here: http://www.kroger.com/recalls. You will need your sales receipt. You can also return unused portions of pet food to Kroger stores where you purchased the product for full refund.

Parents and children are urged to keep a close eye on pets. Look for these symptoms, especially a combination of these symptoms: lethargy, sluggishness, refusing food, yellowish color in gums or eyes and severe diarrhea, especially diarrhea with blood, this can indicate poisoning from aflatoxin. Yellow eyes and gums are a sign of liver or kidney problems. Cornell University offers information and data on Aflatoxin. Aflatoxin is a potent carcinogen for humans and animals. Just as with human illnesses, the very young, very old and pregnant animals typically suffer the worst. Pets with already compromised health will be more susceptible, too. Dogs Win Big on Election Day with Historic Victory in Missouri

Fed up with their state’s reputation as the Puppy Mill Capital of America, Missourians hit the polls on Election Day to declare that enough is enough! On Tuesday, November 2, voters in the Show Me State passed the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act, which appeared on their ballots as Proposition B. (Although policy reform is most often generated through state legislatures, Prop B was a citizen-supported initiative). It is an incredible victory, and one we hope will send a strong message to the governments of other states—namely, that the public wants better conditions for puppy mill dogs, and will take on the task of changing the law themselves if elected officials fail to act.

In the last three years, 15 states, including major puppy mill states such as Iowa, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania, have passed laws to crack down on puppy mills. However, in no other state were the stakes higher for puppy mill dogs than Missouri.

Missouri’s weak laws regulating commercial kennels have made it a haven for substandard breeders. As home to one-third of all the commercial dog breeding facilities in the U.S.—as many as the next three largest dog breeding states combined—Missouri supplies more than 40 percent of all puppies sold in pet stores nationwide. No matter where you live, there’s a good chance that the puppies in the window of your local pet store came from a Missouri puppy mill. Implementation of the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act will provide welcome relief to tens of thousands of adult breeding dogs—not to mention the approximately one million puppies born in Missouri kennels every year.

The new Missouri law, which becomes effective in one year, requires that dogs at these large-scale facilities be provided with sufficient food and clean water, regular veterinary care, adequate housing and space, and access to regular exercise. And with passage of Proposition B, Missouri becomes the fifth state—joining Louisiana, Oregon, Virginia and Washington—to create a limit on the number of intact, adult breeder dogs a commercial dog breeder may keep.

“Tuesday’s passage of Proposition B reflects a landmark achievement in the ongoing fight against animal cruelty,” says ASPCA President & CEO Ed Sayres. “We are proud to have worked diligently on this campaign, and we celebrate this victory alongside the caring citizens of Missouri. The ASPCA is committed to working with local animal welfare groups to help breeders transition to the new humane standards and find loving homes for any displaced Missouri breeding dogs.”

Advises Pet Owners to Discontinue Affected Product Use Immediately

NEW YORK—The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) was notified today about a voluntary pet food recall issued by The Blue Buffalo Company. The affected products include Wilderness Chicken Dog food, Basics Salmon Dog food and Large Breed Adult Dog products. Recent reports have indicated that these recipes may contain higher levels of Vitamin D, which can cause hypercalcemia, a serious, if not fatal illness in dogs.

“The ASPCA advises concerned pet owners who use Blue Buffalo products to contact the company with any questions related to their products and monitor their pets for signs of illness,” says Dr. Camille DeClementi, Veterinarian and Senior Toxicologist at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center. “Should pet owners notice symptoms such as increased thirst, urination, stomach upset or loss of appetite, they should consult their veterinarian or contact the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center for help.”

Hypercalcemia is a serious illness that affects the electrolytes in the body and can disrupt normal organ function. Serious cases can result in acute renal failure and cause damage to the heart or central nervous system. Coma and death have occurred in untreated cases.

“The ASPCA strongly advises pet owners to discuss any potential symptoms with their veterinarian and not to diagnose or treat their pet at home,” adds Dr. DeClementi.

Late on Friday night Curly Tail received a frantic email from a woman who had just purchased two Pugs off of Craigslist. As she put it, she and her family had been "taken on a very expensive ride."

They replied to an ad stating that the owner of two Pugs had no place to live and needed to find a place for her two pugs immediately or else she was going to leave them behind. The well intentioned purchaser received very misleading photos of Mugsy and Carly. The Craigslist seller met her family with Carly and Mugsy in a parking lot. It was explained to us that "once she (the seller) got our money, she jumped in her car and took off."

The distraught email we received said this pair had to be moved immediately because the new owner could clearly see they were in desperate need for major medical care and this was not what she was expecting. She was hoping to purchase 2 healthy pugs and was in for the shock of her life.

This is a classic example of the dangers of purchasing pets from Craigslist! Ads are misleading and you simply never know whom you are really dealing with!

Carly: 3 year old Carly is sadly in far worse shape than Mugsy. We are pleased that she does not have mange however, what was described as "sensitive skin" is actually a very serious skin issue. This is the result of long time neglect & horrific living conditions. Carly's skin is literally peeling off with infection. She is covered in open sores & oozing wounds from infection. She has elephant skin covering her ears, stomach and limbs. Her whole body is swelled from inflammation and her ears & eyes are oozing with infection as well.

This week we bring you the story of Frankie, a sweet nine your old male who was a stray picked up by Animal Care and Control in NYC. ACC contacted Curly Tail letting us know they had a Pug in need of immediate medical attention for a melting corneal ulcer in his left eye – a very critical condition that is also extremely painful. Hours later Frankie was at Dr. Solmon’s where his eye was treated 24/7 - as there was a possibility his eye would need to be removed if its condition did not improve.

We’re happy to report that Frankie’s time at CVC – a total of EIGHT days of around the clock pain management and hourly applications of eye meds – was a success! Frankie did not have to have his eye removed!

Once in stable condition, Frankie was then neutered and also had a dental – during which ten teeth were extracted due to extreme dental disease. Now pain free, Frankie is safely at his foster home and loving life in Curly Care!

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers immediately.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. The Beef Filet Squares were shipped to distributors and retailers throughout the US. These individuals have been notified and have activated their recall procedures.

The treats are sold in 10oz plastic bags marked with “Lot # 10084TL7 Best By Mar 24, 2012” on the top of the bag and on a sticker applied to the bottom.

No illnesses have been reported to date. FDA collected a surveillance sample of “Merrick Beef Filet Squares for Dogs” (lot #10084TL7) which were purchased from a retail store. The sample tested positive for Salmonella.

Consumers who have purchased 10 ounce packages of “Beef Filet Squares for Dogs” are urged to return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-664-7387 M-F 8:00 – 5:00 CDT.

Important! Summer Pug Tips

With summer almost upon us we ask that everyone please make sure your Pug does not become exposed to extreme temperatures for any duration of time. Anything over 80 degrees can begin to add stress to a seemingly healthy Pug's sensitive breathing and can create a life-threatening situation.

You can follow these simple rules to keep your pug cool and healthy during the warmer months.

SUMMER PUG TIPS:

1. Always have cold water available for your pug.
2. If you pug overheats (even in the house if you do not have AC, you can use a cold wet/water soaked towel or blanket to drap over them and have them sit/lie down in front of a fan.
3. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER leave your pug alone in the car during warm months (not even for a 5 minute, quick run into the convenience store).
4. When walking your pug, try do so early in the a.m., OR later at night when the sun has gone down.
5. When outside, if possible try to keep your pug in the shade.
6. If at a meet up or other event and no shade is present, continually monitor your pug and make sure they take breaks from playing.
7. As cute as outfits are, dressing your pug in hot weather can contribute to them overheating.

Signs and symptoms of heat stroke:
Signs of heat exhaustion include heavy panting, hyperventilation (deep breathing), increased salivation early then dry gums as the heat prostration progresses, weakness, confusion or inattention, vomiting or diarrhea and sometimes bleeding. As the condition progresses towards heat prostration or heat stroke there may be obvious paleness or graying to the gums, shallowing of the breathing efforts and eventually slowed or absent breathing efforts, vomiting and diarrhea that may be bloody and finally seizures or coma. Temperatures above 105 degrees Fahrenheit are dangerous!!

What to do in case you suspect heat stroke:
If you dog shows signs of serious distress from the heat it is best to cool him/her immediately with cool or tepid water rather than really cold water. If ice packs are available they can be applied to areas where circulation is very good, such as the "armpits", inquinal region, or neck. Blowing air over her with a fan as you cool him/her off with water can be helpful. As soon as he/she seems to be gaining some comfort proceed to your vet's. Dogs who suffer from heat stroke can develop delayed complications that are really serious, including death, if they are not properly monitored and cared for.

Success Story: Flannery!

You all remember Flannery, our one little survivor from Clementine's litter.

Flannery was adopted on 3/31/10 after being born into rescue on 10/07/09 to Clementine, one of our puppy mill rescue dogs. To read about their story, check out our site at www.curlytailpugrescue.org.

Drea fostered little Flannery, who needed 24hr supervision for the 1st two months of his life. Working with other volunteers they provided round the clock care ensuring Flannery was safe until he turned into a real puppy! And that he did!

Flannery has grown into an amazing pup who is well socialized, loves life, all puppies & people alike. He can give kisses a million licks a minute and that is his favorite thing to do.

Flannery's adoption has been in the works since November. It has been a long road but this epic puppy's story had quite an epic ending. From the pictures, you can see that Flannery (the happiest most lovable playful puppy on the planet) is with a super silly fun loving man who had been committed to Flannery, TRULY committed to rescue & working with curly tail for several months.

Wonderful News! Our dear Hercules has found his forever home!

Hercules background: Hercules was an owner surrender. He is blind and deaf, and his elderly owners own medical needs found her unable to care for him anymore. She was devastated to have to give him up, but ultimately, she knew that curly tail could provide him with t...he love, care, affection, and that all of his needs would be met.

Hercules new family is amazing. They already have a 12 year old deaf and
hard of seeing pug, (Simon), so they're very used to some of Herc's needs. They live in a home with a really open floor plan and his new parents both have very flexible schedules - so someone is usually home. But this is a the best part - they have a 2.5 year old who totally understands and gets how careful she needs to be around Simon and also around Hercules when he joins their family. She usually does her own thing and is just excited when she sees Simon. She only gives him "pretend hugs" because she knows she has to be very very gentle with him :)

Kristin said, "Hercules adoptive mom is truly the warmest most compassionate person ever. as are her husband and daughter." The daughter started crying when Kristin was showing Hercules adoptive mom how to put eye drops in his eyes, and asked "does he have a boo boo,?" she said crying and sad for Hercules. With each pet, she gave to him, she would say.... "gentle for hercky." Really, does it get any better than that!! We are so happy for Hercules . . thanks to everyone who has helped him get here!

Home for Hercules!

Dear friends and supporters,

We have an emergency situation with our sweet Hercules and are putting out an ALL CALL rally to help him.

Hercules is our sweet older boy whose elderly owner was no longer able to care for him. Herc is blind and hard of hearing, however he is potty trained to use his training pads in the mornings and he also eliminates on his daily walks outside.

He has become very attached to his foster mom and loves the security of being near her at all times. Unfortunately Herc’s her living situation has changed and she will no longer be able to keep Hercules.
Our current temporary foster homes are filled to the brim and Curly Tail fears moving Hercules into another “temporary” home will break this sweet boy’s spirit.
We are putting an all call notice out to try and find Hercules a Forever Foster home to avoid having to move him again.
Because Hercules is blind and deaf it takes him a long time to acclimate to his surroundings and we do not want him to move again only to lose another home.

Can you find it in your heart to take this sweet boy in and let him live out his Golden years with the peace and love that he so deserves?
Herc would do best in a one level quiet home where his warm human is around often to comfort him.

Stabilizing Sammie

Upon intake to his foster home Sammie was on 5 units of insulin after every daily meal. Sammie's insulin levels were never correct because of the Cushing’s syndrome, which made him go from too much insulin, leading to seizures or not enough insulin leading to hypoglycemia where he would be weak and stumbling around. Sammie also had chronic diarrhea which led him to be undernourished and skeletal. Once the Cushing Syndrome was confirmed, Curly Tail had to handle the fact that it could be dealing with one or two possible scenarios:

Scenario A.

Primary Cushing syndrome where there is a small tumor on his pituitary gland that is manageable with medicine

Scenario B

Secondary Cushing syndrome where there are tumors on the adrenal gland and is almost always malignant.

Further tests were performed: Sammie's first test was a cortisol stimulation test to confirm the diagnosis of Cushing’s syndrome. Sammie had to have three different shots staggered throughout the day and his levels of cortisol needed to be measured. Unfortunately the test did not go well and Sammie had to spend the night in the hospital. During that visit he also had his glucose levels checked.

This latest visit was very costly at upwards of $1000. They confirmed the diagnosis of Cushing’s syndrome and as a next step he will need an ultrasound to determing if his Cushing’s syndrome we are dealing with are the Primary or Secondary scenario’s noted above.

We will know more about Sammie’s diagnosis and prognosis shortly. Please stay tuned..

In addition to his diabetes and Cushings, Sammie also has cataracts in both eyes which have left him virtually blind.

Pumpkin's story is sad but all too common....one we must share with our dedicated followers. We save those who many others can't because of your dedication and support.

Curly Tail received a call about a 'pet store reject'....a 5 mos old gorgeous little pug puppy. She was perfect in every way, as many appear when looking through the pet store window at a bunch of playing little puppies. This little puppy was purchased from the pet store and her owners brought her to the vet for her final vaccinations only to find that she had something very wrong with her leg. Once it was determined that she would need an expensive surgery, that the pet store would not pay for, she was to be returned to the store. This would also mean that another sale was highly unlikely and ultimately returned to the 'breeder/mill' where she came from.

In a case like this, a beautiful puppy like pumpkin probably ended up in a pet store b/c of this defect which may have been congenital or the result of a trauma. At 5 mos old if no one claimed (or purchased) her....going back to the "so called breeder" would have most likely lead to a horrible and untimely death b/c she was now 'damaged goods'. A reputable breeder would never have sent a pug puppy like Pumpkin to a pet store to begin with....

We pulled little Pumpkin and had her xrays confirm that she needed a femoral head ostectomy - FHO is a surgical procedure that removes the femoral head and neck from the femur. FHO surgery is performed to alleviate pain. It is a salvage procedure, reserved for condition where pain cannot be alleviated in any other way.

Her foster parents Renee & Stephen are committed to Pumpkin's safety and care. They have built a wonderful website just for her and Curly Tail is supporting them in every way possible.

Sadly only one puppy was strong enough to survive, little Flannery.
As difficult as it was we must now focus on the positive.

This is still a large expense for a rescue like ours. We are not breeders and do not have the set up, medical know-how or ability to do what most breeders do on their own. We had to rush Clementine & her pups to the ER facility. Even though we lost a lot of the litter, we still have our medical bills from the ER situation, the nursery set-up, clem's care post delivery & her pups care.

Yoda one week Post Op

Yoda is doing great, almost one week post surgery. He is running around pretty good and there is no appearance of any pain and he does not have any issues with his incision. Yoda is feeling pretty strong and he appears to his foster mom and dad that he is feeling better that he did before the surgery - he doesn't stumble nearly as much! We have started to wean him off the liver medications one week after surgery and we are continuing to check his blood work.

Funding Nemo

Curly Tail received an emergency call about a scared little pug named Nemo. Nemo had "escaped" from his home and was hit by a car. His owners couldn't find him for 24 hrs. When they finally did, he was scared and shivering under the front porch. He was not able to walk....he was whimpering in pain....his owners couldn't afford to take him to the ER. So they called us.

In the middle of the night, we drove out to LI and brought whimpering little Nemo to our 24 hr vet care facility, Center for Veterinary Care. Nemo would be safe and Curly Tail would fund his ER medical treatment.

Our vets strongly suspect abuse when they examined his current injuries and a past injured eye. As you can see from the images, Nemo's eye is sunken and "pushed/punched" in. It has already healed however, he must have suffered terribly when he 1st suffered the injury and then had to wait out the healing with medical care. They also suspect that Nemo was kicked based on the damages to his pelvis (rather than hit by a car) b/c he does not have any injuries elsewhere on his body and b/c of the nature of his previous injuries.

Initially upon intake, Nemo was whimpering in pain and had not gone to the bathroom in almost 24hrs. We weren't sure of the extent of his injuries. Nemo spent 3 days in our ER facility at CVC under Dr. Solomon's Care. He was cared for around the clock where they had him catheterized and on fluids to stabilize him. His pelvis had been shattered and broken in several places.

He slowly started eliminating outside while in the doctor's care. They patiently carried him out gingerly every 2 hours and Una waited and waited until he went. At 1st he was terrified about eliminating, not realizing he had done something good until Una smothered him with love and affection for his good behavior! Now while in foster care, his foster mom Strummer is doing the same thing and he has fully come to realize that eliminating outside is a good thing.

Our vets had suspected abuse when they examined his current injuries and a past injured eye. As you can see from the images, Nemo's eye is sunken and "pushed" in. Fall 2009 Puppy Mill Rescue

We have partnered again with Karen from GMPR in an effort to rescue over 70 pugs from a puppy mill being shut down in Georgia. This horror show of a facility was being forced to surrender their dogs by the USDA....when that happens, you know the situation is dire and worse than you can ever possibly imagine. The dogs were split up into various rescues and we are all doing our part to get them ready for adoption.

In spite of an overwhelming # of owner surrenders and intense medical cases currently in our care, we managed to make room for 6 more of these desperately needy pugs. We were able to rescue Apple, Clementine, Pear, Blackberry, Honey Dew, and Kiwi. These pups are safe in Curly Care and have begun treatment for their various medical needs. These little pups are the most adorable, loving, GRATEFUL little angels. They are all acclimating amazingly well in Curly Care and want nothing but to be held and given love, affection and of course the healthiest & tastiest meals possible.....we agreed.

General Expenses so far:

* Transport & Basic Vaccinations = $1,475.00
* Foster supplies & food = $985.00
* Vetting cost for spay, CBC, fecal/giarda tests, dewormer and 2 wk injectable Rx - $400 per dog / 6 dogs = $2400
* Rx foods for Kiwi - $90

Running Total for these 6 puppies = $5,850.00

Bryant Medical Testing Update

Thank you to everyone who helped us fund Bryant's much needed diagnostic testing. The good news is that Bryant is feeling great and the more time he spends with his foster mom, the more comfortable and loving he is. Such a sweet boy who has no idea that he has any health trouble at all. Bryant is just happy to be loved.

The bad news is that the collective data including definitive needle biopsies of all six tumors have diagnosed Bryant with Mast Cell Tumors which are indeed cancerous. To evaluate an option for treatment we took several xrays to determine whether the cancer had metastasized and it has NOT!!! His lungs and chest are completely clear and at the moment, the cancer is completely localized meaning Bryant has a generous amount of quality life time ahead of him!

The one area we were suggested to operate on was the largest of the six tumors on his back right leg. It hinders his walking and poses the greatest growth danger and lymph node involvement so we have scheduled Bryant to have that cancerous tumor removed next week. We couldn't have done this without all of you generous donors and the same will ring true for his surgery next week----anything you can donate is literally helping us offer this guy a happy and healthy life.

Bryant is a 8-10 year old dear boy who was surrendered to Curly Tail by the ACC Shelter in NYC. Bryant was labeled by the shelter as a "stray" and in the rescue world, we quickly translate that to "dumped." We suspect someone realized his condition was overwhelming and probably could not afford the treatment so decided to drop him in a public park somewhere knowing he would most likely end up in a shelter---unfortunately a very common story.

Bryant is very nervous around people, is vision and hearing impaired and is covered in mast cell tumors large and small. The biggest tumor is on his back right leg and is about the size of a baseball. The weight of the tumor hinders his walking and weighs his back end down a bit. Bryant has several other tumors of size and shape variation all over his body. Some are sore, we know this by the way he whimpers when they are touched. You will see in the video below that even after a bath and combing, his hair still comes off in fistfuls.

Bryant is confused about where he is and does not like to be held. He does his best to squirm out of his foster mom's arms when he is being held. We are working on lots of hand feeding and forced holding with gentle touches to create a bond that we know we can establish. We can see in his eyes that he wants to trust and we know we will begin turning that corner soon.

In the meantime, we will be diagnosing Bryant's condition, treatment planning, and hoping for a positive diagnosis. The diagnostic treatment Bryant needs is very costly and this is just the beginning. We will keep you posted on his progress and medical status as the days progress and he meets our vet.

Plum Medical Update

Plum's allergies are out of control and she has become so uncomfortable that she is literally tearing into her neck! She had pus and blood oozing from her neck and after some slides of the affected areas the vet has now confirmed her infection & sores on her neck are bacterial, not yeast based.

Poor Plum has to wear a neck sock and Bitenot collar to keep her from further damaging the skin on her neck and feet.
We need to stop the bleeding. We need to switch gears and treat her condition even more aggressively than before.

Plum received 2 injections today: Convenia, an antibiotic that lasts up to two weeks, and Vetalog, a steroid that also lasts up to 2 weeks.
We are confident that the injections should give her the fast relief that she needs as we work to stabilize her under a new aggressive plan of attack:

* Weekly baths of Oxydex - this will more aggressively treat & heal her neck sores and open skin wounds related to her allergies.
* Weekly baths pf Malesab - this will help calm and keep her skin under control while she is being treated and possibly for life.
* She is now on a strict diet of Canine IVD duck and potato wet and dry mixture - we will try this for a period of time and see how she does on it.
* Continue Benadryl every 4 hours - to try and keep her histamine level as under control as possible.
* Switch from salmon oil to flax oil for Omegas (may be allergic to fish) - to keep her skin conditioned from the inside out but from a different source.
* Add Quercetin, a natural antihistamine - every little thing that can help, we will try!

Congratulations to Charlotte our sweet little puppy mill puglet who has found her forever home!

We received the following Facebook post from Charlotte's new Dad's announcing her arrival:

Please help me welcome our new edition to our home and family—Mamma Biscuit, who we adopted from Curly Tail Pug Rescue on Sunday, July 12th. Mamma B (as we like to call her on the streets of Washington Heights to give her some street cred) is a puppy mill rescue who spent the first 7 years of her life as a baby-making machine against her will and in horrible conditions, so that the disgusting demand for pet store dogs could be fulfilled. Mamma B is an incredibly chill, relaxed and well adjusted pug despite her horrible past which included deprivation of grass, not being able to open her eyes outside after her rescue because she had never seen sunlight, and being completely fearful of human hands as she would assume they would always hurt her.

Mamma B is now recovered, safe and happy and will live out her Golden
years with Tommy and I in New York City. In the two days that we have had her, Mamma B has become the Lady of our home. She really enjoys sleeping and cuddling, although she is quite selective as to whom and when she gives kisses, and like the true lady that she is, she never gives it away for free.

She loves her short walks through Fort Tryon Park, her biscuit treats after potty, her little toy named Mr. Seahorse and perching herself on our sofa to watch The Real Housepugs of New York on Bravo TV while occasionally gazing up at the chandelier that hangs above her. Mamma B is our Queen—I mean Tommy and I are Queens but she dethrowns us by a landslide! If she wasn’t so so stout, I would have her eat kibble from a crystal glass on a pedestal—and I know she would werk it better than that damn Fancy Feast cat despite having only 3 teeth! Mamma B is my inspiration and my Hero and on a daily basis, she is my shadow as she follows me around the apartment no matter where I go. Her smile is infectious, her three teeth and permanently protruding tongue are so endearing that I literally cannot contain myself around her.

Although Mamma B is nothing short of a lady, I suspect that she has a wild side. She has met the very young and svelt Patrick Henry who resides in apartment 2b and I can say that she is very smitten with him. I will do everything in my power to encourage her “cougar” behavior as long as she doesn’t chase after other young female pugs. It would just break my heart if I came home one day and found her in one of my flannel shirts if you catch my drift!

Puppies Aren't Products Campaign - Volunteers needed!

Curly Tail is looking for some volunteers in the NYC area to help with our Puppies Aren't Products campaign, in conjunction with the Best Friends Animal Society as we take a stand against puppy mills.

Please note these are peaceful pet store protests.

Curly Activists are involved in the lobbying for legislation that would regulate large-scale dog breeders and pet stores with the goal of cracking down on abusive puppy mills. We support legislature that proposes the following:

•Create a Dog Breeder License Act, which would prevent breeders from having more than 20 unaltered (not neutered or not spayed) dogs.

•Prohibit people from obtaining a dog-breeding license if they have been convicted of a felony animal-cruelty crime, including dog fighting.

•Require dog breeders to keep dogs in buildings without wire flooring and with sufficient heating, cooling and ventilation.

•Require pet stores and breeders to provide potential pet buyers with the dog’s full medical history, information of spaying and neutering and information about any prior medical care. Humane Society officials said many dogs from puppy mills end up having substantial medical problems because of interbreeding and exposure to disease in cramped environments.

•Establish penalties starting with fines and escalating to having animals seized and breeding operations shut down.

Curly Tail has become apart of the Best Friends Network through the Best Friends Animal Society in order to lobby against pet stores that sell puppy mill puppies.

Best Friends is a grassroots effort stepping up to reduce the number of pets bought and sold, and to increase adoptions from shelters and rescue groups. Together we can help millions of dogs living in breeding facilities around the country.

Meet Plum

Poor little Plum was scared and sickly sitting in the ACC of NYC when we found her. She couldn't imagine what she could have done so terribly wrong to end up there?!

She has been terribly neglected for a very long time and her body shows the painful signs to prove it. Her body is covered in sores, it is painful for her to be picked up by her loving foster mom, she can barely walk on her paws, she flinches in pain if her foster mom tries to put her medicated drops in her ears! Everything just hurts so much!

We don't know the full extent of Plum's illness yet....we know that her surface and most immediate medical needs must be treated 1st and then we can take it from there. As always, we will do what is needed to get Plum to be happy, healthy & pain free!

Success Story: Curly (now Marlon!)

Curly was pulled from an area shelter and was fostered by Curly member Adrienne. It didn't take long for foster mom Adrienne to fall completely in love with Curly.and adopt him! Curly has been renamed Marlon! From the pictures below it is easy to see why. We just love the Froggy pose!!

Curly Tail was on hand at the Puppies Aren't Products protest at American Kennels on Lexington Ave in New York City last month:

The staff at American Kennels will tell you that their puppies come from breeders they’ve been working with for many years, but in reality, their puppies come from inhumane puppy mills. A reputable breeder would never sell their puppies through a pet store.

The peaceful protest provides information about puppy mills and rescue organizations where puppies are available. The goal of the protest is to educate the public, which will in turn help end the cycle of homeless pets.

Success Story: Tiger

As you can see Tig is doing very well in his new home. His new adoptive family is Still working on his allergy issues but they are getting better. We hear he is getting a lot of outdoor time and loves to eat dandilions. Every day is something new to discover. The girls are loving him and the little neighbor girl looks forward to seeing him every morning at the bus stop.

Pixie Update May 2009

Pixie continues to thrive in her new home, she is really doing great!

We hear that she loves to lay in front of the heating vent soaking up the warmth, and using he new dad's slipper as a pillow! In every picture update we receive Pixie looks happier and healthier. We couldn't be more pleased!

Her new parents even had Pixie's picture turned into a beautiful painting!

Puppy Mill Pugs Update

All four pugs needed sulfur baths and shaving immediately to rid the bugs including a nest of spiders?!?!?!? found in the groin area of one.

All dogs have inter-digital cysts on their paws from wrapping around the wire crate bottom for years.

All pugs have minor scars, bite marks new and old and clearly display signs of being in a pen style mill.

The three females are being treated for severe urinary tract infections.

Penelope, has a severe form of jaw displacement and the most extreme form of dental disease we have ever seen which includes a naturally formed drainage sight just under her chin which is the only reason this infection hasn't killed her.

Romeo has one "dead" eye from untreated infection and as a result, the eye muscles have atrophied leaving nothing to support it in the socket, giving the eye a sunken look. Romeos other eye is also severely ulcerated.

Success Story: Rocky

Rocky was adopted yesterday by a lovely woman from Massachussetts who was completely smitten with Rocky before she even met him. Rocky's new mom just lost her husband to a tragic death and was practically in tears when she looked at Rocky and felt the instantaneous companionship. They are going to be the sweetest pair and will spend their days romping around in her daycare center (Rocky is sooooo gentle with kids) and the nights will be spent relaxing side-by-side.

Puppy Mill Rescue - Spring '09

Curly Tail Pug Rescue worked for weeks with Help Save One to pull these 4 dogs from some of the worst mill conditions. These pugs are terrified of human hands. They were severely infested with fleas and other insects. Their bodies are covered in cuts, open wounds and scars. Their journey towards recovery begins with us.

Look for their full stories, slide shows and videos to be posted shortly. As usual, we will provide you with updates as we go along...as we learn...as the healing begins.

The following video is of Romeo, the only male of the four. The video was taken on day three. The 1st days the mill dogs spent in Curly Tail foster care was simply spent trying to bond. Their foster mom would lie down on the floor with food in her hand and speaking in a high yet quiet voice. All four mill dogs are petrified of human hands so teaching them that our hands will only offer love and food is very important in gaining trust.

Romeo does well with the consistency but after several hours of being alone, he quickly forgets what we are teaching him and becomes petrified at the sight of humans all over again...even his foster mom. What you see in this video is utter fear and a true struggle with fight or flight for Romeo. This video is sad but also heartwarming. You will see strong fear but by the end of the video, you will see him suddenly remember his foster mom by scent and slowly he welcomes her touch, eventually coming right in with great trust to lick her face. The fear they have is profound but the progress they are making and the forgiveness they are showing is beautiful.

The next video is of Wendy who is hugely overweight and has the most profound yet non-vocal fear of humans. This video was also taken on day three and although she is still clearly terrified, she has made remarkable progress. When Wendy first arrived and her Curly mom tried to reach out to her, she would immediately run away and try her best to melt into the floor to avoid being touched.

Most times, she would roll on her back/belly up in a fit of submission and fear. By day three, she still runs from hands and and avoids contact at all expense but she will no longer roll onto her back in "I give up" mode

Each year, millions of Americans buy new puppies from pet stores or on the Internet. Meanwhile, millions of dogs suffer on the "production line" in America's puppy mills - living in tiny, wire-bottomed cages, in squalid conditions with little to no human contact.

While puppy mills attempt to maximize their profits, churning out as many litters as possible, roughly 11,000 animals are euthanized in America's shelters every single day.

The Puppies Aren't Products initiative seeks to help people understand the link between puppy mills and pet stores. Our goal is to shine light on the truth behind the puppy in the pet store window, so that American consumers no longer unknowingly support puppy mills. Our goal is to see that America's dogs no longer live in these cruel conditions.

We believe that together we can change the industry. We can reduce the number of puppy mill dogs sold in the community, and increase the number of homeless animals adopted into loving homes.

Pixie's new home!

We know you have all been anxiously awaiting the good news on Pixie and her updated condition. Well we are very happy to report that Pixie was healthy enough to be adopted by her new forever family last month! They sent us the following update with pictures which we are thrilled to share!

Pixie is settling in nicely. She naps on the bed with us, curls up on the couch with us to watch TV, and is now playing the "chase" game with our other pug, George. She is almost completely yard trained and loves to bask in the sun. Thanks again to Curly Tail Pug Rescue. Pixie is a wonderful addition to our family.

FDA Confirms Probe of NUTRO Pet Food Deaths, Illnesses

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has confirmed that the agency is investigating NUTRO pet food, following a series of unexplained illnesses and deaths. Consumers have been complaining for more than two years that their pets have become ill after eating NUTRO products; many have recovered when they were switched to other foods. The company has steadfastly denied that its food is to blame.

Until now, the FDA has been mum about whether it was actively investigating the company. Today, the FDA’s Division of Freedom of Information confirmed the agency has an ongoing investigation into NUTRO — and said that investigation could be criminal or civil in nature. The office did not elaborate on the nature or focus of that investigation.

The investigation came to light when the FDA denied a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request by ConsumerAffairs.com seeking a list of complaints and lab results the agency has collected regarding NUTRO pet food. The agency denied the request and said that releasing the information could hamper “prospective or ongoing” action by law enforcement.

“The document(s) constitute record(s) compiled for law enforcement purposes, the disclosure of which could reasonably be expected to interfere with enforcement proceedings,” wrote the FDA’s George A. Strait, Jr., assistant commissioner for public affairs.

You may remember Gidget who was rescued from an Ohio Puppy Mill in December where she was used to breed over and over again.

We are VERY happy to report that she has now been placed in her forever home!

Gidget was the mother of the 3 black Christmas pups, including Butter. She has been named Tess by her new forever family, a beautiful name for a beautiful girl.

They also sent this picture of Tess along with the following note:

Butter continues to struggle

Sad news: Butter lost the eye we had performed surgery on 2 times to try to save it from the severe ulceration he had which was not responsive to topical medicine & progressed to the last possible layer of tissue just before rupture.

We had to enucleate his eye on Wed, 4/8/09. The conjunctival graft was healing perfectly but the eye suffered too much trauma, developed glaucoma and was no longer visual. The pressure in that eye was soaring higher by the hour.

Even more so, his remaining eye (which had a superficial ulcer but was originally healing) ruptured that morning and then 3 more times that same night. We rushed to the AMC emergency medical center but were not able to receive care on site. We were beyond lucky that Yasmin who has been working with us on Dr. van der Woerdt's team - was there to help. She helped contact every possible opthomologist in the tri-state area and was prepared TO FLY to North Carolina to help Butter.

Yasmin was able to reach Dr. La Croix of the VMCLI who was on call and came in from home to see Butter. We hopped in Yasmin's car and were in West Islip in the middle of the night.

While performing surgery on the newly ruptured eye, Dr.'s enucleated the other eye suffering from glaucoma. For the surgery on the remaining eye, Dr. La Croix chose to perform a corneal conjunctival graft where she plugged the ruptured site with a piece of his cornea. This is a more aggressive form of graft. He has pulled through his 3rd surgery succesfully...and now we wait. We are doing everything we possibly can to try and retain some vision for this amazing little 14 week old puppy.

More to come when he comes home from the hospital....Please send some good thoughts out for Butter. As always your donations are unbelievably appreciated!

Sprinkle was one of the Black Christmas pugs who was rescued from a puppy mill in December.

Sprinkle has now been named Archie by his new forever family! We hear the little guy is doing well at potty training and is quite the sweet snuggler too. When Artchie is not running around like a little firecracker he just wants to be in his new mama's lap.

Archie has also become good friends with his new pug brother Clark who even lets Archie steal his toys!

I have run into so many people that recognize me from my work with sophia, the spina bifida pug puppy. So many people are incredibly supportive and follow our experiences blogging about Sophia. Lots of people have written asking for information and updates.

Since sophia has come into our lives, I have launched a pug rescue with my partner, Kristin Balch. Our rescue is called Curly Tail Pug Rescue. I run the NYC branch and Kristin runs the Boston branch....we work together as great partners and friends. With our 2 main branches so spread out, we are able to effectively cover several states (NY, NJ, CT, MA and parts of RI / NH). Sophia was definitely a huge source of inspiration to us and has become a Curly Mascot if you will. She is an important symbol of our work and attitude towards rescue.

Developing & running the rescue, fostering lots of ill & special needs dogs, building the website AND posting on her blog is a bit much to say the least!

I created a page on our website expressly for her called Curly's Saving Sophia. We want to keep people posted on her progress, using her cart and upcoming surgery (happening this summer). We also do not want to detract from the many other dogs who come into Curly care that truly need lots of medical attention as well. There are so many that need so much. Moving her blog to a page on the website seemed to be the best solution.

Friday March 27 at 11:PM, ABC's Nightline will be investigating puppy mills!

Dear Friends,

We at Curly Tail Pug Rescue hold a very strong philosophy that we maintain the short term goals of saving the pug(s) and the long term goal of terminating all forms of irresponsible breeding, specifically, Puppy Mills. We strive everyday to work against the function of Puppy Mills and have a truly attainable goal of making such horrifying places history.

Being committed to this goal makes Education a huge component to Curly Tail Pug Rescue's mission.

It has been almost a year since the Puppy Mill story first aired on the Oprah Winfrey show and it received the highest viewer response of any Oprah Show in years.

Now we need to spread the word about this very special Nightline. Only by educating as many people as we can, will we be able to help these animals. And after you watch the program, please do not hesitate to contact ABC and Nightline to thank them for casting such a strong light on the plight of our nation's puppy mill dogs.

We need everyone to help to spread the word about Puppy Mills and the absolutely deplorable conditions that these dogs live in. The more people spreading the word, the more of a fighting chance we can give to these undeserving animals, not just Pugs, but all dogs who are being bred this way. ABC Correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi and investigators from Nightline travel the byways and back roads of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania - visiting numerous puppy mills and filming Main Line Animal Rescue's volunteers as they rescue breeding dogs and puppies from Lancaster County's notorious Amish commercial breeding facilities.

This promises to be a very special program. If you are involved in rescue, advocate on behalf of the millions of puppy mill dogs interned in our nation's commercial dog breeding facilities, or if you just simply love animals, you will not want to miss this.

Sharyn Alfonsi interviewed, on camera, an Amish breeder while touring his facility - a first for network television. With approximately 500 dogs housed on his property, this commercial breeder speaks openly about an cloaked in secrecy and suspicion - the cruel factory farming of man's best friend.

Meet Butter

Butter's eye is ulcerated and has progressed dangerously close to rupturing and will need to have a Corneal Transplant.

Butter has been receiving round the clock care, medication, and above all love & attention. We will be transporting Butter back to the AMC (Animal Medical Center) first thing tomorrow morning. We will need to wait until the Dr. examines him again to see if we have a chance at saving his eye or vision. We will then proceed with whatever course of action they deem necessary, as we are able. We are currently waiting on tomorrow's estimate and medical plan.

People Foods to Avoid Feeding Your Pets

Chocolate, Macadamia nuts, avocados…these foods may sound delicious to you, but are actually quite dangerous to our animal companions. ASPCA nutrition experts have come up with a list of top 10 people foods that you should not feed your pet. If ingestion of any of these items should occur, please note the amount ingested and contact your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 immediately.

Chocolate, Coffee, Caffeine
These products all contain substances called methylxanthines, which are found in cacao seeds, the fruit of the plant used to make coffee and in the nuts of an extract used in some sodas. When ingested by pets, methylxanthines can cause vomiting and diarrhea, panting, excessive thirst and urination, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures and even death. Note that darker chocolate is more dangerous than milk chocolate. White chocolate has the lowest level of methylxanthines, while baking chocolate contains the highest.

Alcohol
Alcoholic beverages and food products containing alcohol can cause vomiting, diarrhea, decreased coordination, central nervous system depression, difficulty breathing, tremors, abnormal blood acidity, coma and even death.

Avocado
The leaves, fruit, seeds and bark of avocados contain Persin, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs. Birds and rodents are especially sensitive to avocado poisoning, and can develop congestion, difficulty breathing and fluid accumulation around the heart. Some ingestions may even be fatal.

Macadamia Nuts
Macadamia nuts are commonly used in many cookies and candies. However, they can cause problems for your canine companion. These nuts have caused weakness, depression, vomiting, tremors and hyperthermia in dogs. Signs usually appear within 12 hours of ingestion and last approximately 12 to 48 hours.

Grapes & Raisins
Although the toxic substance within grapes and raisins is unknown, these fruits can cause kidney failure. In pets who already have certain health problems, signs may be more dramatic.

Yeast Dough
Yeast dough can rise and cause gas to accumulate in your pet’s digestive system. This can be painful and can cause the stomach or intestines to rupture. Because the risk diminishes after the dough is cooked and the yeast has fully risen, pets can have small bits of bread as treats. However, these treats should not constitute more than 5 percent to 10 percent of your pet’s daily caloric intake.

Raw/Undercooked Meat, Eggs and Bones
Raw meat and raw eggs can contain bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli that can be harmful to pets. In addition, raw eggs contain an enzyme called avidin that decreases the absorption of biotin (a B vitamin), which can lead to skin and coat problems. Feeding your pet raw bones may seem like a natural and healthy option that might occur if your pet lived in the wild. However, this can be very dangerous for a domestic pet, who might choke on bones, or sustain a grave injury should the bone splinter and become lodged in or puncture your pet’s digestive tract.

Xylitol
Xylitol is used as a sweetener in many products, including gum, candy, baked goods and toothpaste. It can cause insulin release in most species, which can lead to liver failure. The increase in insulin leads to hypoglycemia (lowered sugar levels). Initial signs of toxicosis include vomiting, lethargy and loss of coordination. Signs can progress to recumbancy and seizures. Elevated liver enzymes and liver failure can be seen within a few days.

Onions, Garlic, Chives
These vegetables and herbs can cause gastrointestinal irritation and could lead to red blood cell damage. Although cats are more susceptible, dogs are also at risk if a large enough amount is consumed. Toxicity is normally diagnosed through history, clinical signs and microscopic confirmation of Heinz bodies. An occasional low dose, such as what might be found in pet foods or treats, likely will not cause a problem, but we recommend that you do NOT give your pets large quantities of these foods.

Milk
Because pets do not possess significant amounts of lactase (the enzyme that breaks down lactose in milk), milk and other milk-based products cause them diarrhea or other digestive upset.

Curly Tail received an urgent call for help about an emaciated pug named Pixie. Apparently her owner was very very ill and Pixie was dying along side of him. Her owner was not able to take care of himself, let alone poor little Pixie. Friends pulled Pixie from the situation and into informal foster care. Everyone meant well but were in over their heads b/c Pixie needs a tremendous amount of care. That is when CTPR received the call. Thank goodness Pixie was able to get safely into our rescue and receive care within 2 hours of getting that call!

Pixie is a very sweet baby girl. She is only 3 y/o. She has a great energy level considering how emaciated she is. She weighs in just under 10 lbs.......all skin and bones. Even though she is ravenous, we have to feed her small amounts of food on a regular basis b/c overfeeding is very dangerous. She has an Rx wet food combined with various baby foods and nutritional supplements to help get her stable. So far she has been holding down food in small increments.

Pixie's ears are terribly infected, her nails were overgrown and curled into her paws. She has multiple cuts and infections that we are treating all over her paws. We cleaned out her wrinkle which was heavily caked with crusted dirt & yeast infection. Her teeth are cleanShe knows to go potty outside and tried to hold it even though she has been having severe diarrhea. She has had a preliminary exam and an X-Ray. She will need much more medical testing & care to find out what really happened to Pixie & hopefully get her healthy again.

Pixie has an adorable face and will be a beautiful little puglet if we can get her back to a normal weight again.

Meet Cosmo

Cosmo is an adorable pug puppy and is only 4 mos old. We are working with our friends at GMPR on this case b/c we have so many people that have been interested in pug puppies & especially in our special needs pug puppy, Sophia.

Little Cosmo was born with megaesophagus (ME). His condition is very manageable and he is so worth it!! He just needs an extra bit of TLC during feeding time.

His esophagus doesn't swallow to force foods down. After eating, he needs to be held upright for about 15 min. Being held in the upright position helps keep him from regurgitating. (This is perfect bonding & cuddle time!!

It is best that he eat out of elevated bowls. He cannot hold water down. So he would have a diet similar to our special need pug puppy, Sophia. Organic baby foods, wet puppy food and baby oatmeal are perfect! If needs be, dry food can be soaked in water overnight. (Sophia eats like this, very rarely ever goes to the water bowl and she is fully hydrated! Baby food is packed with water. Earth's Best works well b/c most other baby foods have onion powder.)

Except for being held after mealtimes, Cosmo is just like any other squirmy, playful little pug puppy. He loves to play and take naps! You can read more through GMPR: Cosmo's Blog .

Buddy

Buddy is our little 2.5 year old piece of black licorice! He is as silky as ever and has a spark like no other. He trots arond his foster house witha bounce in his step and a youthful playfullness. Buddy is healthy, up-to-date on vaccines, and neutered. He is quite the agility dog and can easily be mistaken for a cat with the way he thinks nothing of jumping from the floor onto counters, tables, and couches. If you are looking for the most handsome black pug who has the sweetest disposition and perfect young adult activity level, this is the dog for you. Buddy would love to have a family who will take him everywhere and keep active during the day, then come home and get coozy with him on the couch at night.

Jake

Jake is a two year old boy who is healthy, up-to-date with vaccines and scheduled to be neutered in just a week. Jake is a nice boy who prefers to be the king of his house. He gets along well with his foster siblings but has a strong preference for being in a single dog household. He does very well on a leash and socializing with all dogs and cats but when it comes to being in his home with his mommy and daddy, he doesnt want any competetion. This isnt to say he wouldnt be fine with many of other animal friends, just prefers to have short term visitors! He is spoiled and here at Curly Tail, we honor that and do our best to keep our puglets happy so a single dog household is where this handsome king will go!

Harvey

Harvey is the victim of a puppy mill in the mid-west. He is 8 y/o and clearly displays signs of having been in a mill since puppy hood. Although he has arrived emaciated and reveals a sorrowful bony physique, his spirit is very much alive. He is for the first time experiencing the loving touch of a human hand. He does not show any signs of having been abused, but the neglect is pronounced in all areas.

Everything is new to him - right down to the feel of the carpet on his paws and the freedom of being able to walk around outside of a crate! His paws are gnarled from years of winding around the wire bottoms of the puppy mill crate and skeletal. His spine and hip area appear slightly curved (most likely from never being able to grow appropriately due to constant space confinement). He has little muscle tone but his daily walks are sure to increase that! He is already thriving in his foster home. He has learned quickly (by show of his waggily tail) that when his foster mom walks in the room, he is going to receive the touch of a loving hand.

Harvey is scheduled for a neuter, vaccines, and several dental extractions. We are confident that with hearty meals, some TLC, and daily exercise, Harvey will learn to be like all other eight year old pugs. In fact, he has already learned to jump on the couch like his foster siblings!

If you want to feel the ultimate adoption reward and have the time and patience for Harvey, we encourage you to submit an application. We can assure you, any love you offer him is certain to be reciprocated ten-fold....for what he knows of humans, it is a miracle to see him put forth such an unconditional love so readily.

Otis

Otis
is a handsome teddy bear of a boy, Otis, came to us as an owner surrender. Otis has been with the same mom and dad since he was a 9 week old pup and has been very well cared for.

Circumstances & medical issues have made it very difficult for them to continue giving Otis the love and care he is used to. With heavy hearts they decided to entrust Curly Tail with finding Otis a home that can continue to love him they way they do.

He is very mellow and gets along with kids, dogs and cats famously. He actually like cats better than dogs! Otis is healthy and UTD on all of his medical needs. He does get daily eye drops to help keep his eyes moist. If you are interested in this cuddle bug a loving forever home, please contact us!

ER Rescue Puppies Update

We have some great news on the ER puppies! We are happy to share that both Pheobe and Cullen (the strongest of the four) are just about ready for adoption!

Pheobe

Pheobe is one of the 8 week old pug puppies from the ER situation on our homepage. She has finished all of her antibiotics and respiratory treatments. She has stabilized medically, making her an adorable, adoptable puglet.

Pheobe is the sweetest girl ever and lives for kissing her foster mom and chewing anything she can get her little baby teeth on. She is a puppy in every sense with short lived energy bursts followed by sweet puppy naps where she goes belly up and forgets about the world. Pheobe has the greatest appetite ever and in true pug fashion, lives for food. Pheobe is almost completely pee pee pad trained and will need to soon be introduced to the great outdoors. Being so sick with pneumonia made her vulnerable to cold temperatures so she has yet to explore a yard of any sort but she is a smart little cookie and is already understanding the fundamentals of house training and commands like "No." After having been dealt an unfair hand from the beginning, Pheobe truly deserves a perfect forever home.

Cullen

Cullen is one of the four ER puppies from our homepage and similar to Pheobe, has finished his last course of medications and respiratory treatments and has stabilized making him ready to find the perfect forever home.
Cullen is a sweet little boy with the most inquisitive pug eyes and most innocent face you'd ever see. Cullen is a petite pug but being smaller than his sister Pheobe does not mean she is the boss....Cullen's pint-sized body wins every game of chase, fetch, and tug-of-war! Cullen is a sweet little boy and is just as happy playing tug of war as he is cozying up next to his foster mom while she does Curly work. Cullen has a "I'm happy to be alive" bounce in his step wherever he goes and he will be sure shower his lucky adoptive family with the sweetest love there is!

Cullen is being fostered in MA.

2009 Campaign to Fight Puppy Mills in Full Swing

PuppiesAs America ushers in a new era of federal leadership, many
state governments are also getting back to work—and at least one of
them is making puppy mill reform a priority. Last Sunday, the ASPCA
joined animal welfare advocates and Illinois lawmakers in Chicago to
announce the arrival of Chloe’s Bill, legislation that will help stamp
out the worst puppy mills in the Prairie State.

“Illinois has a unique opportunity to adopt one of the strongest
commercial breeding laws in the country,” says Cori Menkin, ASPCA
Senior Director of Legislative Initiatives. “As commercial breeding
increases throughout the United States, particularly in the Midwest,
it is reassuring that Illinois is recognizing the need for stronger
laws before the prevalence of puppy mills becomes a blight on the
state’s reputation.”

As currently written, Chloe’s Bill would:

* Limit to 20 the number of unaltered dogs a breeder may possess
* Ban anyone convicted of felony-level animal cruelty from
acquiring a dog-breeding license
* Prohibit wire flooring in commercial breeding facilities and
create guidelines for appropriate heating, cooling and ventilation
* Require pet stores and breeders to provide customers with every
dog’s full medical history
* Establish penalties for violations, ranging from fines to animal
seizure and license revocation

Sponsored by State Rep. John Fritchey and State Senator Dan Kotowski,
Chloe’s Bill is named for a young cocker spaniel—rescued from a Macon
County, IL, puppy mill—who was present at Sunday’s press conference.
Now living with one of the animal control agents involved in the raid
on her kennel, Chloe is the sole survivor from her litter. Like
thousands of other commercial dog breeders in the U.S., the owners of
Chloe’s kennel focused on producing as many puppies as possible with
little regard for the physical and mental health of their animals. The
dogs found at this puppy mill were matted with feces and urine, and
infested with fleas and internal parasites. Many suffered from
deformed paws from living their lives on wire-floored cages.

As Rep. Fritchey explained to the media, “We are not trying to do
anything drastic; we’re not trying to do anything radical. We’re
trying to implement standards for what is humane care, for what is
decent care.” Fritchey added that although he expects the bill will
encounter some opposition, any dog breeder who would oppose it is
likely to be the type of breeder that should make consumers wary.

How can you help? It is animal lovers like you who bring about change.
Even if you don’t live in Illinois, what happens in one state becomes
easier to accomplish in others—so we need you in the fight. In the
coming weeks, the ASPCA Advocacy Center will email our Illinois
advocates, providing guidance on how they can join us in getting

Adoption Update Beau and Tammy

We have two more adoptions to report this week:

Tammy is the second to last puppy mill pup to be placed in a permanent home. Tammy now resides in a loving home in Staten Island with 2 women who adore her and are working with her to ensure a quick and smooth transition from puppy mill prisoner to pampered pug princess.

Beau Owner-surrendered Beau is a energetic, charming little guy who has been with Curly Tail for quite some time after his first adoptive family surrendered him back to us because hey were unable to give him the exercise and structure that a active pug boy needs. Beau was lucky enough to find a new home in Massachusetts with a large fenced in yard to run in and an older brother/mentor to help show him the finer points of pottying outside.

Congrats to Beau and Tammy!

4 Pugs Rescued from Kill Shelter in South

Curly Tail received a plea from a rescue contact who knew of 4 pugs in a kill shelter in the South. We are working with Help Save One to get these dogs out of the shelter and fully vetted and safely into foster care.

Help Save One is a non political, humane, and caring organization with volunteers who work regular jobs and then spend countless hours every week into the wee hours of morning promoting these dogs. They work on pulling the dogs of North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia.

The dogs they save are scheduled to be gassed in various kill shelters. Click here to learn more about 'gassing'. It is not a humane way to euthanize an animal. It is not peaceful, it is violent and terrorizing....and completely unnecessary.

Emergency Puppy Rescue

At 9:00 on Sunday night, Curly Tail received a call about four pug puppies (only a few weeks old & a approx 2-3lbs) who were very sick and in the hands of an irresponsible back yard breeder in Massachusetts. The breeder was trying to sell the puppies for the highest price possible and needed them out by Wednesday because he was being evicted. After several hours, and with the help of two pug loving angels outside of Curly Tail, we were able to convince the owner to "sell" us all four puppies. (We normally do not purchase pug puppies however, once seeing the puppies in dire need of medical attention, we could not leave them behind.) The "breeder" finally understood that they were at death's door and he would not be able to sell them for much more money.

The puppies were clearly struggling with major respiratory problems. They were gasping for air, foaming through the nose, and trembling. Our rescue vets wonderful staff (Dr Meade in Burlington, MA) met us at the clinic at 11:00pm and began medical intervention immediately. Chest x-rays revealed that all four puppies have an incredibly severe case of pneumonia and two of the puppies have major structural deformities compounding the impact of the already deadly pneumonia.

Ivy, the smallest of the four has what is believed to be "swimmers disease" which is a deformity of the chest. She was most likely very weak and on her stomach for great lengths of time because she couldn't stand up on her own without human help. She is so young & the bones are so soft, being on her stomach helplessly for such long periods in a swimming position, caused the sternum to flatten (similar to a baby developing flat head). This is contributing to her difficulty breathing and may not ever correct itself. She also has major skeletal deformities in other areas that will need orthopedic attention, if we can get her past the life threatening pneumonia.

Penguin, her brother, appears to have brain damage - signs from previous deprivation of oxygen. Although he eats well, he is only able to breathe on his own by use of heavy medications. His airway on x-ray is the size of coffee stirrer and his little body is fighting to stay alive. He already displays clear signs of processing delays. He is also having mild seizure episodes. Both Penguin and Ivy are together, their prognosis is still uncertain, but they are being given 24hr care by Dr Meade and his dedicated staff to give them a fighting chance.

The other two pups, Cullen and Phoebe, are being fostered by one of our amazing foster moms. She has created an at-home-incubator in her bathroom by use of high heating source and running a hot shower every few hours to help facilitate breathing. Both Cullen and Phoebe appear to be at the beginning stages of stabilizing with a lot of medication and TLC. This rescue effort is generating exorbitant amounts of bills and we could really use your help. If you can contribute in anyway, even if it means sending pee pee pads & hot water bottles, your donation will be unforgettably appreciated.

Happy Tails

We are happy to report that 4 of the 8 puppy mill rescues have now been adopted by fabulous people!

Angel was adopted on Sunday January 12th by a great couple and will live out the rest of her life with her new pug sister in an uber-fabulous house in Ogunquit, Maine.

Samson was adopted by a lovely couple in Massachusetts who were seeking a nice, cuddly yet quiet pug. Samson was a perfect fit and he will now be living out the rest of his years napping and eating in peace and comfort.

Teddy is another sweet and quiet pug who was adopted Sunday January 12th by a single woman living in New York City. Teddy and his new pug brother Mugsy hit it off immediately and Teddy will live out the rest of his days enjoying long walks in Central Park and longer naps snuggled with his new bro.

Sugar Pie was adopted this weekend by a great woman residing in Rhode Island. The applicant drove all the way to NYC to meet Sugar and was totally enamored by Sugar's sweet disposition and couldn't resist the little pink tongue that's always peeking out of the side of her mouth. Sugar is this applicant's first pug and she has been waiting to adopt a pug for years, so we are confident that sugar will be babied and spoiled silly in her new home.

Jack In addition to our puppy mill adoptions, owner surrendered Jack was officially adopted on January 11th by a wonderful family in Massachusetts.

Puppy Mill Rescue Update

The plan was to pick up the Puppy Mill rescues late Sunday night from New Paltz and Albany, NY. Unfortunately the winter storm made the transportation efforts more dramatic and there were some last minute change in plans!

Two of our rescue pugs were pregnant & the stress of the earlier trip brought on labor. One of the pugs, Angel gave birth during the transport! Our wonderful vet Dr. Doug Meade (Burlington Vet Hospital – www.burlingtonvet.com) who was so incredibly patient & caring, helped direct our transporters via cell phone. About 4 hours later - another puppy was born. Unfortunately, even after lots of loving from her mommy, and our amazing transport driver Kristi administering "mouth-to-mouth" on her, she did not survive. One puppy remained, Little Liam.

Kristi met Drea in New Paltz and she was able to get all of the pugs safely into NYC where they were immediately taken to our NYC Curly Tail vet, Dr. Tufaro at 12:30am to take Angel into emergency care and get fluids & milk into premature Little Liam. Gidget, who was also pregnant, came in as well. Both pugs and puppy stayed with Dr. Tufaro for a couple of days.

We were able to transport some of our rescues into foster care (throughout NYC and NJ) and some up to Kristin in Massachusetts. In MA, Kristin brought Gidget and some of the other puglets to get the additional medical care they needed.

Angel and Liam were not well enough to make the trip up to MA and stayed behind in NYC. Drea brought Liam and Angel home, Angel didn't really know how to be a mom, so Drea gave Liam IV fluids and bottle fed him Angel's milk. Sadly, after lots of ups and downs, we lost Little Liam in the middle of the night.

Christmas day arrived.....and Gidget went into labor! After several hours, she safely delivered her litter of jet black Christmas puppies! They are healthy and doing well so far with 24 hr medical supervision.

Many of the pugs are healthy and safe. They are in foster care with our amazing volunteers and doing incredibly well with their crate training...something we didn't think was possible with puppy mill rescues! They are unbelievably sweet and well behaved! We do have 2 more dentals to provide, several pugs with untreated ulcerated eyes and 2 females that are not doing well from the surgery they had prior to transport. We are taking care of all medical treatment needed. Our healthy pugs (who are all spayed/neutered, UTD on their shots and had their dentals) will be placed with some of the many wonderful families we have already on our pre-approved list.

This was Little Liam who tried so hard but left us too soon. He was only 3 days old.

This rescue effort cost us over $6800 already and that is without all of the medical care needed. Your support and donations during this time are very much needed. Any donations received now will help defray some of the expenses we have already paid and the medical bills that are coming in daily.

8 New Pug Arrivals!

Dear Friends and Fellow Pug Lovers,

A breeder is closing up shop and needed multiple pug rescues to help and take in her 53+ pugs! There were 19 puppies - 4 weeks old and younger. The puppies remained in local rescues to ensure their health and welfare. 30 young adults remained, needing to be placed within the East Coast pug rescue community.

They will come east from the Oklahoma/Missouri border. We will be funding the transport, vaccinations, health certificates, spaying/neutering + additional vetting (including dentals) and care of all the dogs.

Curly Tail has committed to rescuing 8 pugs in this rescue effort. This is a significant and expensive undertaking for our organization. We are making every effort to get them healthy, stable and into foster care where they will receive the love and nuturing they so deserve.

The pugs that we are taking in are a mix of 3 males & 5 females whose ages range from 2-7 years old. Please check back for updated pictures and bios of all rescued pugs around the holidays.
